Pain & Injury
Treating pain and injuries is both fascinating and rewarding because acupuncture can provide profound relief and quicken healing. Often, pain is markedly reduced in the first treatment. By three treatments, you will likely have a clear sense to what degree acupuncture can help. Acupuncture treatment for pain reduction is proven to be so effective, in fact, that the U.S. military now employs acupuncturists for this purpose. Many times acupuncture is more effective than narcotics.
We treat virtually all types of pain, including back, neck, shoulder, hip, and joint pain. With sprains and broken bones, acupuncture can significantly reduce recovery time. Herbs may be prescribed which further aids and quickens healing and long term structural function. We may also suggest restorative exercises to provide relief and prevent re-injury.
In western terms, acupuncture is thought to relieve pain in several different ways:
- Releases opioid peptides. Opioids naturally occur in the brain and have an analgesic (pain reducing) effect. Certain acupuncture points stimulate the nervous system, helping to release these opioids.
- Alters neurotransmitter and neurohormone secretion. Acupuncture activates the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to alter secretion of these chemicals, which play a direct role in pain sensation as well as internal organ function.
- Stimulates electromagnetic points. Many acupuncture points are strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals. Stimulation of these areas prompts the flow of endorphins—the body’s natural painkillers.
Common conditions we treat:
- Acute Injuries
- Chronic Injuries
- Sports Medicine
The efficacy of acupuncture continues to be proven in large, scientific studies:
